Body language

Everyone uses body language

People can not live without each other, we are social beings. As soon as we are in contact with others we are communicating. For this we can make use of spoken and written language. In these ways we make the content of a message clear to each other. However we can also communicate without words. This kind of communication tells us something about the relationship between people. Often this is more important than getting the content of the message across. The communication about this non spoken communication, which tells us something about the relationship between people, is called Meta-Communication. Communicating about communication!

When we connect with a person, we also have to make it clear to each other how the content of a spoken message needs to be interpreted. How we do this says something about the relationship we have with the other person, or think we have anyway. Often words are inadequate for this purpose. For instance we do not tell each other that easily how we feel about each other, or how the words of a message need to be interpreted. To make the meaning of our words clear we use body language. Body language is a language without spoken words and is therefore called non verbal communication. We use body language all the time, for instance looking someone in the eyes means something different than not looking someone in the eyes. In contact with others it is just not possible to be not communicating something.

Body language is used especially to express feelings. For instance if we do not like someone, it is often difficult to say that directly to the person. However we can make it clear either intentionally or unintentionally through body language. The opposite is also true. We may say that we ARE angry through words yet our body language may be saying loud and clear that we are NOT. This can be very confusing for the receiver. This is usually described as giving out double messages – one message in words and an opposite message in body language. It is also difficult to lie or cover up our feelings through body language. People may give their true feelings away by not being aware of their body language. Research has shown that most people pay more attention to, and believe more readily, their impression of how a person acts through body language than what is said through words. As a consequence we tend to doubt, or put a question mark behind, the spoken words if they do not correspond with the language of the body .

How we come across to someone is decided only for a small part by the words we speak. To leave a good impression behind, say at a job interview, it is important that we know, and to a certain extent can control, our body language. The person on the receiving end of our body language will have a feeling or impression that is often difficult to describe – difficult to put into words or difficult to prove what actually was communicated. Haven’t we all said at times: ‘I have a feeling he/she likes me’, or something like: ‘I doubt if what he/she is saying is really the truth’. This type of feeling is called intuition. Body language plays a big role in intuition as it gives us messages about the other person that we can interpret at an intuitive level. It is therefore necessary to get to know our own body language first. We should learn about it so that we can recognise it in others as well as in ourselves. In our daily lives we encounter many forms of body language gestures, these are a few examples:

  • Stress: shaking of legs
  • Lying: Face turned away, no eye contact, or looking to the left (fabricating information). Also wiping hands on trousers to get rid of sweat or fidgeting with hands
  • Aggression: Clenched fists, squaring of shoulders, stiffening of posture, tensing of muscles
  • Anxiety: Massaging temples, different than normal breathing rates, hunched shoulders, nervous head movements

But there are so much more signes of body language….

We all know of course the love signes  ….  i dont have to make a drawing of those…????

Turn ur face to the sun

shadows will fall behind u

Hi Sweeti! The Body Language topic  you have chosen is so interesting, concise and so true! I too have noticed how my own b.l. changes with my moods and circumstances. Knowledge of body language will help us gain more insight into ourselves and that of others. We will know what makes us happy, tense, angry or sad. Likewise, we will know what people think of us, much better.  As you have correctly pointed out, there is no mistaking the body language of two people in love! Have a great week ahead, Sweeti…may you spread more of your sunshine around you!         Love, Ruma.

I’m not biting my nails 🙂 I stand with an erect posture and do believe India can make it happen against the Lankans…and yes, you do have a tough one there! Interesting fact is a defeat for the Lankans can still see them thru to the next stage but India needs a win to make it thru…also even if India wins SL can make it thru as well.

Ideally, India wins and both India and SL go into the next round of the competition!

    Hi sweeti
Oh How long has it really been since I really visited your space, i think its been some 8-10 days indeed. It was holidays and then I had been outta station for some work and some marry making too. Now I am back, sorry for not being able to read your entry as I wanna do it and savour every word of it in leisure, so I wd have to wait for some time. But I really liked those lines, "Turn your face to Sun and Shadows will fall behind you." How true. But be in dark and there would be no shadows at all. No shadows no worry, for no one follows you. Ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaa . how is everything, take care Bye

Two sacks, turn coats and what not…but I guess we can always enjoy the game from a neutral standpoint if anything like that exists 🙂 Dutch footballing achievements are well known here…and they do get some support apart from Brazil, Argentina, Germany and England which have a lot of supporters.

Bermuda’s my new country and I hope they beat Bangladesh…quite unlikely but then that’s what India needs to get into the next round 🙂

  11. Adrian says:

Hi, I know it’s strange but, it’s standard procedure to be placed on ‘administrative paid leave’ during the investigation. The other alternative is to, fire them on the spot for ‘behavior unbecoming a Teacher’  which of ourse is the School SuperintendEnt’s call!

There is probably more to that story…:-)

  13. Renuka says:

    Hello Sweetie,
This is very interesting, Its so true sometimes the words can be very deceptive, but the body language communicates more. so many times i feel to move away from a person due to the different body language  like indefference, while words are perfectly sweet, come and sit here…ha! ha!..not that either makes a difference but its helpful you understand better and follow…Wishing you all the best..Do come and visit, there are two more posts I have put, whenever you have time.

Hi Sweeti! I hopped over to your blog via Renuka’s blog! There is so much to learn from everyone, isn’t there? Each one has so much to contribute. How was your weekend? Hope things are going okay for you? It’s really hot here now, and we are trying to cool down by drinking lots of water and having a bath twice a day!Bye and God Bless!                                                Love, Ruma.

  16. sillygloop says:

In theory Indian players can be given Bermuda citizenship and play for them versus Bangladesh but then, Bermuda might object saying they’ve already been beaten enough and will not allow it on compassionate grounds 🙂

  17. Enter says:

Oye! I was jus kidding 🙂
But yeah, like u say, when a player is in form and getting wins for his team he commands respect. money, fame n power, not to talk of being worshipped by the followers of the game!

  18. Chris says:

    Hey Marij!

How has you’re week gone? Hope you are calm, relaxed and ready for what the new week brings. I always enjoy Mondays because it’s like a completely new start to a working week and it usually starts for me as a day off to unwind 😀 It has been very busy here.
A brilliant and well written topic as always which has my full interest. Those body gestures are always the main signs because they are what people cannot help doing no matter what they try. So you cannot put down the ‘huge’ list of signs people make for the feeling of love? 😛 That has been one of those topics I decided to touch on this week. I always get a big responce of comments on that topic but never hard to guess why, hehe.
I hope you’re week begins well for you!

    Chris x
